Hi there! 👋 I’m Joanna, author of The Blond Travels. If you find my articles helpful, I’d be happy if you could follow me on Instagram, or . Support from readers like you means a lot to me and helps to keep this website alive. Thank you! 🙏

Are you going to Iran? You want to buy good and proven insurance? You don’t want to worry about the bills from the hospital or the doctor’s if something bad happens? The insurance to Iran is very easy to buy and at a very reasonable price.

I have travel insurance on me at all times. Always. I usually use the services of World Nomads and only in singular cases I resort to buying some others. Traveling to Iran was different and one, quite serious problem occurred.

I organised the whole trip to Iran by myself and struggled with finding some good information that would help me to sort everything out. That’s why I decided to write everything I know about the practical side of travelling to Iran. In this post you will find information on how to find the best insurance and how to buy it.

Insurance for Iran – Why is it so important?

Before I tell you what problems I have encountered I would like to inform you why having insurance is so important.

Better safe than sorry!

Yeah, I know you’re a fearless traveler and you’ve always been fine. You don’t need insurance because why should you waste your money? You won’t use it anyway.

I will not argue with you because it’s your life but know that I have experienced a few situations in my life that confirmed my belief that there is no better investment than good insurance.

A friend of mine had a serious scooter accident in Thailand. He was in the hospital for a few weeks. Lying in a coma. Once he woke up the doctors gave him a bill for around 20,000 USD. If it wasn’t for his insurance I don’t know how he would have paid it.

I got sick while traveling also in Thailand. My bill for the appointment with the doctor wasn’t so mind-blowing but thanks to the insurance I could spend my money on massages and trips instead of medications and tests.

Accidents happen. Food poisoning, ankle sprains, strokes, car accidents. Each one of them can happen in Iran. The cost of travel insurance really isn’t that big. Be safe and buy one.

You will need insurance to get a visa

Whether you want it or not you will have to buy insurance to Iran. If you want to get in you have to do it. It doesn’t matter if you apply at the embassy, via an agency, or on the border, you still have to have insurance on you.

Issues with insurance for Iran

I have mentioned before that I had problems buying the insurance policy for my travel to Iran and that I usually use World Nomads. This time I also wanted to remain faithful to them. I submitted my data, clicked “Next” and received information that the company doesn’t offer insurance for Iran. None of the companies I used to use did.

Because of Iran’s complicated relations with other countries, it is isolated from the rest of the world and some aspects of traveling to Iran might be a little more complicated. Buying insurance and using debit cards is either very limited or practically impossible.

Fortunately, I found 1stQuest – a company which helps those traveling to Iran find accommodation, flights, bus tickets and also insurance! I read opinions on the internet and bought the policy without a second thought.

How to buy the insurance to Iran?

The process of buying insurance to Iran using 1stQuest was really simple.

Here’s what you have to do:

  • Enter 1stQuest’s website.
  • Click “Insurance”
  • Enter your date of birth and the dates of your stay and click “Next”.
  • Here you have to enter your data.
  • You will find the price for your insurance at the bottom of the page.
  • Agree to the terms of the policy.
  • Click “Apply”. You will need a debit or a credit card.
  • You will get an e-mail with the purchase confirmation and a policy certificate in 2-3 days.

What does the insurance cover?

Remember that the policy you buy is a travel policy, not a medical one. If you suffer from any chronic condition it is best to contact the embassy and ask if there is a possibility of using a more complex medical care in Iran. You can also contact 1stQuest and they will always help you with anything.

Your insurance for Iran covers:

  • Medical expenses and hospitalization, except for chronic diseases that occurred before the policy was purchased. Coverage up to 1000 euro, own contribution 24 euro.
  • Emergency dental care. Coverage up to 200 euro, own contribution 24 euro.
  • Emergency return home following the death of a close family member or serious illness. Coverage: full.
  • Transport or repatriation in case of illness or accident. Coverage: up to 5,500 euro.
  • Repatriation of mortal remains. Coverage: full.
  • Legal Assistance. Coverage: up to 250 euro.
  • Repatriation of a family member traveling with the insured. Coverage: full.
  • Loss of passport, driving license, national identity card abroad. Coverage: 200 euro.
  • Loss of registered luggage. Coverage: up to 150 euro.

The cost of insurance for Iran

The cost of the policy will surprise you. It is not expensive considering what it offers. Of course everything depends on your age and the date of your trip to Iran. Prices begin at 12 euro. I paid 22 euro!

You had an accident. What now?

You are in Iran and something happened. You need to see the doctor, suddenly return home or what’s worse, stay longer in a hospital. How to apply for a refund?

It’s simple.

First of all, the whole procedure is described on your policy certificate (it is best to print it out and carry with you throughout the trip). If you want the insurance company to refund your money you have to contact them directly. You will find the contact information on the certificate. In my case, the company was called Saman Insurance.

Next, you give them your name and your policy number.
Briefly describe your problem.

If at a given time you are not able to contact them gather all the necessary documents such as prescriptions, hospital bills and bills for any other services. Next, send them to the insurance company. Although, it is best to contact them before you go to the post office.

That’s it! I hope I helped you choose good insurance and you will soon fully enjoy Iran. Safe travels – as they say! Let me know if you liked Iran.

In this article, I placed affiliate links to 1stQuest – a company that really helped me with the organization of my trip. If you buy their insurance I will receive a small fee from the sale which will allow me to keep writing these practical posts about traveling. You won’t pay anything additionally!
