Hi, I'm Joanna, the author of The Blond Travels. In the worlds of Thailand and Portugal, I feel like a fish in water - and it's no coincidence! I've been exploring Thailand for over a decade, and I've settled in Portugal for 6 years now. My mission is to support Dreamers - just like you - in discovering these fascinating countries and helping those in love with them find their own place on Earth, preferably for good! Let's uncover these unique corners of the world together.

Chiang Mai, despite its fame, doesn’t have a good system of transportation. You can drive a scooter, but I know that it’s not for everyone. Red taxis are very popular, but sometimes it’s hard to catch them and they might not take you to where you want to go. Uber is a great alternative and it works well in Chiang Mai.

If you don’t know Uber, then it’s time to get to know it. This simple application will help you to get to your destination very quickly. You don’t need to bargain and be afraid of scams or worry if you get to your hostel at night. Uber drivers are available 24/7.

Why Uber?

If you come to Chiang Mai for the first time, it will be hard for you to get your head around the city. Red taxis are not always available and drivers sometimes refuse to take passengers.

On top of that, there’s the constant battle with taxi and tuk-tuk drivers, who raise their prices as soon as they see a foreigner. Bargaining for a good price is sometimes stressful.

Disadvantages of Uber in Chiang Mai

Uber wasn’t welcomed by the local taxi drivers. There were protests and blockades and accusing each other of cheating. At the moment Uber drivers cannot pick up and drive their customers to the airport. This doesn’t stop them however and in the worst case scenario, you will be dropped off outside of the airport gates.

Uber drivers often don’t speak English, which is not such a problem if the driver knows where he’s going. Quite often they rely on GPS and if that fails, they drive around for a long time looking for the destination.

Prices

Uber in Chiang Mai is relatively cheap, although there are cheaper options. To get somewhere in the city costs 100 Baht and to get to Doi Suthep – 500 Baht one way. In comparison, for a red taxi in the city, you will pay 20-30 Baht and to Doi Suthep 500 Baht both ways.
